Now published: Postfix, Cyrus, Web-Cyradm on Ubuntu: Mail Server Setup Guide

Postfix, Cyrus, Web-Cyradm on Ubuntu Mail Server Setup Guide, a very detailed, step-by-step how-to on setting up a mail server that is
-  flexible (meaning easy domain & account admin), efficient (meaning it can handle a lot of traffic on modest hardware),
-  safe (meaning no open relays, strong anti spam/virus controls), and
-  reliable (meaning best of breed open source code with years of of burn in and no major security holes).

Oh, and it's open source, so the cost of ownership is primarily correlated with your ability to understand the configuration and diagnose/solve problems yourself...you and google and a dozen or more mailings lists to help, that is.

From the introduction:

" Postfix SMTP and Cyrus IMAP/POP3 are highly efficient open source server packages with extensive production burn in. Add the excellent open source anti spam and anti virus tools, SpamAssassin & ClamAV, along with the Web-Cyradm for a half-decent domain+account control panel, and you get a production quality mail server competitive in most ways with top commercial offerings. "
" However, though the individual packages install and work, considerable tweaking is required to get the whole installation working smoothly together. Herein is a how-to for Ubuntu 8.04 server edition. "
